A selection of photographs of specimens of the elusive native patagonian deer, the huemul (hippocamelus bisulcus). Its scarcity and discretion still allows it to live peacefully in the forests of Andes foothills.

Things could easily change. Although it should never be for the worst again, as in the beginning of the colonization (persecution and slaughters), they could easily be severely bothered for other reasons (commercial/economic : tours). So if you know where to see some of these wild animals, just keep it for yourself...

After the long period of dearth of winter it's diet consist first of new buds, then later in spring and in summer huemuls eat a lot of the things the forests offer, such as leaves, mushrooms, flowers, etc..

Males have horns while females don't.
